Best Co-op wines to try

Pair your festive feasts with a Bordeaux blend from South Africa for £9.50 and Mâcon-Villages at £10.25. The Decanter team has selected its highlights from the UK supermarket chain Co-op, which boasts 2,500 local, convenience and medium-sized stores across the country.

Ranging from the seasonal classics to offbeat explorations, the majority of our selection is under £15.

From the latest additions of Co-op’s ‘Irresistible’ range, the very first Assyrtiko at £10 is a must-try for its smoky stonefruits and rounded palate.

While the stock lasts, secure a bottle of Les Pionniers Vintage Champagne 2013 to impress guests with its complex yeasty palate and richness on the nose.

For whites, the French classic favourites – such as Domaine Roblin’s saline, mineral Sancerre Les Côtes, as well as Domaines Schlumberger’s richly textured Pinot Blanc and Wolfberger’s aromatic Gewürztraminer, both from Alsace – won’t disappoint.

The range of food-friendly reds encompasses Fantini’s unoaked juicy delight, Vanita Negroamaro from Puglia, CVNE’s solid, muscular Imperial Reserva from Rioja, or Famille Perrin’s fruit-forward ‘Close Encounters’ from Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Our value choices under £10 include a crisp, crunchy Australian Sauvignon Blanc from Oxford Landing, a ripe, juicy Minervois red from Co-op’s new cooperative-made ‘Lot Series’ range, and AdegaMãe’s easy-quaffer Terras de Lisboa Red.

And we can always rely on the supermarket chain’s Irresistible 10 Year-Old Tawny Port and Irresistible Pedro Ximenez Sherry for comforting dessert alternatives, or for sipping next to the fireplace.
