There are public wine tastings dedicated to individual grape varieties. Others are dedicated to the wines from a particular region of the world. Some are dedicated to only organic wines, or natural wines. But to my knowledge there’s only one dedicated to the whole category of white wines, and it’s taking place next month in the bucolic Anderson Valley.
In case you hadn’t heard, white wine is the latest thing. Red wine consumption is taking a serious dip, and white wine consumption is rising steadily. No one is entirely sure why this is the case, but restaurants in San Francisco are shocked that no one is buying Cabernet anymore, and everyone seems to want to drink Sancerre, of all things.
All of which would put what is now known as the International White Wine Festival very much on point. Anderson Valley used to host an Alsace Varieties festival, but it has now been reborn as the broader and more inclusive International White Wine Festival, the only public wine tasting where you can wear light colors without fear.
But beyond the obvious fashion opportunity, this festival offers a grand tasting on Saturday, February 15th where you can taste white wines from more than 40 California producers, along with wines from France, Germany, Austria, Spain, and even Mexico. There will be lots of bites of gourmet food from a number of local purveyors plus music and more.
If you stay the night (you’d want to book your lodging ASAP given the limited availability in the valley) you can spend Sunday tooling around to a bunch of open houses from wineries in the valley, and then make your way back home.
February is a beautiful time to visit the secluded, beautiful Anderson Valley, so what have you got to lose?

Tickets to the event will run you $150 (or $175 for VIP access which gets you in at 11:00 AM). Bring a designated driver, and they can hang out and nibble to their heart’s content for a mere $60.
