This is my ode to one of my favorite wine events in the world (that happens to be underway at the moment): VieVinum. It’s the biannual wine trade fair for Austrian Wine, and it takes place in the beautiful city of Vienna, which is pretty unique in the world for having a large wine appellation completely contained within the city limits. As a result, Vienna truly is a city of vines, with hillsides dotted with vineyards sprinkled throughout the city on both sides of the Danube River. These vineyards have not been ripped out and replaced with residential or commercial real estate thanks to the 18th-century radical tax reforms of Empress Maria Theresa and her son Joseph II, which allowed winegrowers to sell their own wines tax-free, as long as they were unbottled and sold at the site of their production. As a result, small-scale commercial wine production has been commercially viable for more than 3 centuries in Vienna, which is stuffed full of heurigen, the small wine bars attached to wineries that sprung up as a result of these decrees and have been going strong ever since.
