Old vines are appreciated for many things, but perhaps the first characteristic they convey is purely sculptural. After many decades of growth, these old souls with their twisted arms, whorled bark, and scraggly canes communicate their persistence in the face of environmental adversity. This particular vine catches the last rays of the sun on the plateau known as La Crau in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of the Southern Rhône Valley, where the vines sink their roots deep beneath the river cobbles known as galets roulés. The vine has not yet been pruned, and its canes have begun to turn golden as the sap recedes and it goes into dormancy for the winter.
