Poliziano is one of the largest and most successful family wineries in Montepulciano, it has 130 hectares (ha) of vines including two single vineyard Vino Nobiles in the Caggiole and Le Grazie Pieves located west of the town of Montepulciano. The winery is releasing its first Pieve wine this year, the Poliziano 2021 Le Caggiole Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Pieve Caggiole, which we review along with the rest of the Poliziano portfolio below. The wines were tasted at the winery and the Vino Nobile Anteprima in February of this year.

The winery was founded in 1961 by Dino Carletti with the initial purchase of 22 ha of land, and his son, Federico, has expanded the vineyard and modernized the winery. He has increased plantings and share of Sangiovese in the wines. The percent of Sangiovese in the classic Vino Nobile has increased from 70 to 90 percent, and the single vineyard Asinone is now 100 percent Sangiovese. He has also reduced the use of barriques for aging and increased the use of larger tonneaux. Poliziano has also expanded beyond Montepulciano and now has vineyards in Maremma, Cortona, and Montefolonico as well. Maria Stella Carletti has recently taken over the winemaking responsibilities from her father, Federico. The consulting enologist is Carlos Ferrini.

Poliziano Asinone Vineyard Le Grazie Pieve
Poliziano’s two single vineyards, Asinone and Caggiole, illustrate how terroir changes even within small areas in Montepulciano. Locates just 1 km apart, Asinone is a 12 ha vineyard sitting at 350-400m elevation with calcareous clay soils and a south-southwest exposure, while Caggiole is a 14 ha vineyard at about 350m with sandy, limestone soils (less than 15% clay) and an easterly exposure. Both wines are 100% Sangiovese, fermented in stainless steel, and matured about 18 months in 500L French oak tonneaux. The Asinone produces smaller berries with thicker skins than does Caggiole, and the Asinone wine is darker and bigger than the Caggiole, which is more red-fruited and refined in style. Thanks to Francesco Carletti for showing me the vineyards.

The Wines
Poliziano 2023 Rosso di Montepulciano ($20) 90 This all Sangiovese Rosso opens with a dark cherry nose and a fruit forward palate that offers good freshness and a sense of purity. An easy drinking wine that comes mostly from lower elevation parcels in the Graciano pieve. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in concrete.
Poliziano 2023 Fiori Rossi Rosso di Montepulciano 91 A clear step up from the regular Rosso, the Fiori Rossi is richer and more complex with notes of underbrush complementing delicious dark red fruit. 100% Sangiovese from two vineyards, one in La Grazia and one in Graciano and aged in 33hl oak casks. Not a supermarket wine; only sold to restaurants and independent wine shops. Unfortunately, not shipped to the US. Price in euros is about 18.

Poliziano 2021 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano ($32) 93 The 2021 Vino Nobile offers a vibrant, complex perfume of dark cherry, herbs and leather. The firm palate is layered with rich breadth of texture and perfectly proportioned acidity. Aged 14+ months in oak barrels, about 15% barriques. 14.5% alc. Poliziano 2022 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 92 The 2022 Vino Nobile is a flavorful wine from and easy drinking vintage. There was more rain than in 2021, so ripening was relaxed. Flavors tend towards dark cherry with a silky texture and fine round tannins with good length.

Poliziano 2021 Asinone Vino Nobile di Montepulciano ($75) 95 A single vineyard wine, Asinone is big and broad, almost meaty in texture. Generous flavors of currants, dark cherry, and hints of herbs and sweet oak on a rich, suave palate, finishing with an exceptionally persistent aftertaste. Asinone is from a southwest facing parcel rising to 400m in La Grazia with clay dominated sandy soils. Smaller berries and thicker skins than Caggiole. Matured 16-18 months in about 50% new French tonneaux. I also tasted a 2016 Asinone that was superb, rich and fresh with round tannins and perfectly ready to drink.
Poliziano 2020 Le Caggiole Vino Nobile di Montepulciano ($100) 93 This single vineyard wine has two parts, a north facing part with older vines on sandy-limestone soils and a newer part that is being replanted. Although older, it’s a bit more closed than the 2021 Asinone. Shows ripe cherry with a touch of leather on a refined bouquet and silky palate with dry tannins. Long focused finish with a hint of raspberry. 100% Sangiovese matured about 18 months in 500L French oak tonneaux. 14% alc. Poliziano 2021 Le Caggiole Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Pieve Caggiole 95 Medium-light ruby. From the stellar 2021 vintage, this Pieve Caggiole offers a beautifully perfumed nose of red and dark cherry with notes of rose petals and light toasty oak notes. Elegant with a layered palate, a silky texture, and flavors of red fruit with light savory notes. Poliziano 2022 Le Caggiole Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Pieve Caggiole 94/3 The 2022 vintage of Le Caggiole is bottled but not released. Medium light ruby red. A bit lighter that the 2021 vintage with red cherry/berry and notes of sage and marjoram. Elegant texture and medium, dry tannins. At this point, lacks the finesse of the 2021 vintage, but this may change with another year in bottle before release.
Poliziano 2021 Le Stanze del Poliziano Tuscan IGT ($70) 93 Dark ruby. Opens with scents of black currant, blackberry and spice. Firmly structured but suave in texture with rich dark fruit and very firm tannins. A wine of real depth and power. About 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot sourced from a vineyard planted in 1984 in the Graciano Pieve and matured 18 months in 50% new French barriques.

Poliziano 2012 Vin Santo di Montepulciano 97 Dark amber. Poliziano’s Vin Santo is made from white varieties, predominantly Malvasia with some Grechetto. It offers lovely aromas and flavors of walnuts, vanilla, and caramel and has an unctuous, creamy mouth feel and great acidity that lifts up and refreshes the finish. A very impressive Vin Santo. 12.5% alc.
