If I am going to be a hero, however, I don’t think I mind being a hero to old vines. This morning, the shortlists for the Old Vine Hero Awards were announced, and I was humbled to find my name among them.
Put on by the Old Vine Conference, the Old Vine Hero Awards are in their third year, I believe, and strive to recognize people, organizations, and programs dedicated to supporting the cause of old vine vineyards around the world.
I am being recognized for my work with the Old Vine Registry in the category of Communication and Education. I have certainly put in countless volunteer hours to get the registry to the place it is today, but those hours don’t feel particularly heroic. Diligent, for sure—often a grind—but for a certain type of person a perverse pleasure can be found in meticulous organization and classification, and well, I’m that kind of person.
The Old Vine Registry is still in its adolescence, and so in some ways it feels like this recognition of me (and by extension, it) may be premature, but I am definitely proud of how it is evolving. If the broader wine community (including whoever it is out there that decided to nominate me for this award in the first place) feels I’m deserving of recognition, then that is something I sincerely appreciate.
Decide for yourself and vote for the folks you think are deserving in every category, and I thank you for voting regardless of whether you think I’m among them. Supporting old vines means supporting the people who are passionate about them.
Voting closes on Wednesday 26th March at 21.00 GMT.
