Vinography Images: Horn of Plenty

Perhaps the most iconic and controversial aspects of the biodynamic farming regimen are Preparations 500 and 501, which involve packing a cow horn with either manure or pulverized quartz and burying it over a winter or summer. The horns are dug up half a year later, and the materials inside are added to water to make sprays designed to improve the health of both soil and vines.

The cow horn is said to channel cosmic energies into its contents while it is buried in the ground. Whatever you may think of this particular aspect of biodynamic farming, the overall results of biodynamic vineyards (when it comes to the wines they produce) are hard to deny. This little scene, which looks like it was styled for a biodynamic photo-op, was discovered in a corner of the vineyard at Seresin Estate in Marlborough, New Zealand.
