Czar 1999, bottled in a bespoke crystal, gold-engraved decanter produced by Vista Alegre
Cast adrift in the middle of the Atlantic, more than 1,600km west of Lisbon and 1,200km north-west of Madeira, are nine tiny islands that make up the autonomous Portuguese region of the Azores.
Pico, the second-largest island and the main wine producer of the region, is dominated by the 2,531m-high stratovolcano of Mount Pico, Portugal’s highest mountain. Viticulture is concentrated in the black, heat-retaining lava beds (lajidos) around the flat, exposed village of Criação Velha, in the island’s west.
