Historic Vineyard Society Tasting: May 4, San Francisco

Some of you know I’ve got a thing for old vines. They’re living sculptures, artifacts of culture and history, repositories of precious genetic heritage, and they can make some damn good wines that can have more complexity, finesse, and balance than young vines planted in exactly the same place.

I spend some of my free time cataloging old vine vineyards for the Old Vine Registry, which I helped design and launch last year.

But that’s only one of many old vine projects around the world. California has a special old vine organization called the Historic Vineyard Society. It was started in 2011 with the goal of becoming the authoritative source of information on California’s oldest vineyards. We’ve partnered with them to ensure all of their vineyards are represented in the Old Vine Registry.

But more to the point, and perhaps more interesting than just a database of vineyards, the Historic Vineyard Society puts on tastings of old vine wines.

The next one is on May 4th at Fort Mason in San Francisco. This is a rare opportunity to taste a large chunk of California’s viticultural heritage in a single sitting (or standing as the case may be). It’s a walk-around tasting that will feature a who’s-who of top boutique wine producers in northern California, among which are some of my favorite California wineries of all time.

The current list of who’s pouring includes: Amevive, Arnot Roberts, Bedrock, Birichino, Brockmeyer Family Wines, Carol Shelton, Corison, Desire Lines, Enfield, Fine Disregard, Frog’s Leap, Gagnon-Kennedy Historic Vineyards, Hendry Wines, Ian Brand, Jeff Perlegos, Limerick Lane, Louis M. Martini, Martha Stoumen, Nalle, Nonesuch, Once & Future, Perlegos Family Wines, Phelan Farm, Reichwage, Relic, Ridge, Robert Biale, Sandlands, Scar of the Sea, St. Amant, Stirm, The Crane Assembly, Three Wine Company, Thomas Fogarty Wine, Turley, Under the Wire, and Williams Selyem.

It’s a tasting you shouldn’t miss, especially if you’re a California wine lover.
