I taste a bunch-o-wine (technical term for more than most people). So each week, I share some of my wine reviews (mostly from samples) and tasting notes in a “mini-review” format.

They are meant to be quirky, fun, and (mostly) easily-digestible reviews of (mostly) currently available wines (click here for the skinny on how to read them), so you can get right to the point and decide if they’re for you (or not). Cheers!

  • 2020 Monteabellon ’14 Mesas’ Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero): Dark! Lots of cherry, tobacco, wood spices, dried herbs, cinnamon, vanilla bean, big structure… but good acids! $39 A-
  • 2011 Principe de Viana Tinto Reserva (Navarra): This one is ALLLL about the smoked meat course now. $NA B+
  • 2020 Fattoria La Massa ‘La Massa’ (Toscana): Serious and seriously good; herbs both dried and fresh, red plummy fruits, and plenty of palate scaffolding. $30 A-
  • 2021 P+S Prats & Symington Post Scriptum de Chryseia (Douro): Juuuuiiiiiccccyyyyy! Spiiiiiiiiiccccyyyyy! $28 B+
  • 2017 Kendall-Jackson Grand Reserve Pinot Noir (Anderson Valley): Losing steam now, but has interesting transparency in its powerful cherry fruit. $30 B+
  • 2021 Merry Edwards Olivet Lane Chardonnay (Russian River Valley): Big on the stone fruits, the cream, and the freshness. Full throttle FTW! $68 A-
  • 2021 Merry Edwards Olivet Lane Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley): Super seductive. Boysenberry, rhubarb, bright cherry and raspberry, dried herbs, just fantastic length. Superb. $75 A
  • 2021 Merry Edwards Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (Sonoma County): Big, brambly, bountifully fruity, and bodacious-ly delicious. $48 A-
  • 2021 Merry Edwards Richaven Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley): Young, bold, dark, savory, lifted by dried rose petals, tea leaf, and wild berries, and a beauty to behold. $80 A
  • 2022 Merry Edwards Winery Sauvignon Blanc (Russian River Valley): A classic for a reason. This is bountiful, and beautifully crafted. Tons of tropical fruit, spices, herbs; super long, it keeps on delivering. $55 A-
Upscale your palate! My books are available from Rockridge Press!
