There is simply no substitute when it comes to educating your palate (not to mention discovering new wines you’ll love) for a big walk-around wine tasting event. While they can be overwhelming at times, they’re generally a lot of fun, especially if they represent a category of wines that you love, or one you’re trying to learn more about.
If you enjoy Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, and other grapes commonly found in the Rhône Valley, you’re in luck. Next month Paso Robles is playing host to The Rhone Rangers Experience 2024, a morning of education and tasting put on by the Rhone Rangers trade association.
The event kicks off, appropriately given all the tasting in store, with a coffee bar on Sunday morning, followed by a Rhône Essentials seminar led by wine writer Ray Isle. The seminar will lead into a wine-soaked lunch, and then after lunch the Grand Tasting will showcase more than 300 wines from the roughly 80 wineries in attendance.
The list of wineries scheduled to pour can be found on the event website.
Since the event is on a Sunday (of a holiday weekend) you could even make a full long-weekend of it, and head down to Paso Robles on Saturday for some great food and a spin around the tasting rooms in Tin City on the day before.
Any way you choose to do it, you’ll get a chance to taste some really excellent wines along the way.
2024 Rhone Rangers Experience
Sunday February 18, 2024
9:30 AM to 1:30 PM
Paso Robles Event Center
2198 Riverside Ave
Paso Robles, CA 93446 (map)
Tickets for the Grand Tasting only will run you $92.44, and the cost for the full event including seminar and lunch is $212.06. It is likely this event will sell out, so I recommend getting your tickets in short order. They can be purchased online. The event also has selected hotel partners offering discounted rates, so you can sleep off all that Syrah and drive home on President’s Day morning.
