I don’t suppose I have many of you checking this site daily for updates, but for those few regular readers who might have been wondering where your regular weekly news roundup and any other posts have disappeared to this week, I’m penning this little note to answer your question.
Short stort: they’ve been pre-empted by Portugal. This past Sunday I flew out to Lisbon and then headed north to Coimbra where I was one of the presenters at the WineFuture 2023 conference. The days of the conference were long with few opportunities to break away, so I didn’t have time to do any posting.
Now I’ve found my way to the Douro wine region where I’ve packed my days with winery visits that are also making it rough to get any postings out, even the rudimentary ones I’m used to dashing off in spare moments.
I’m going to have a lot more to report to you on the Douro, but I’ve arrived here just before the peak of the fall vine colors and boy-oh-boy is it spectacular. The weather hasn’t been that great, but there have been moments where the sun has broken through and the vineyards have made the massive steep hillsides along the river seem like they’re utterly bejeweled.
I wanted to at least share a glimpse of that with you in the few spare moments I’ve managed to carved out today between my last winery visit and my pending harrowing drive in the dark, rainy night down one-lane cliffside roads(!) to dinner.
If you want some more eye candy from one of the world’s most spectacularly beautiful wine regions, you can follow along on my Instagram.
