Darrel Joseph is a judge at the 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA).

Darrel Joseph is based in Vienna and began writing about the wines of Central and Eastern Europe in 1995, after his palate was captured by Hungary’s Tokaji and Austrian Grüner Veltliner and Riesling.
Since then, his specialization broadened to include Croatia, Serbia and all other Balkan wine countries, plus Russia and the Caucasus (Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan).
Over the years, Joseph’s writing has appeared in Decanter, Wine Spectator, Meininger’s Wine Business International, Harpers Wine & Spirit, Wine-Searcher.com and more. He has also contributed to a number of books and guides, including Hugh Johnson’s Pocket Wine Book and Gault & Millau (Austria).
Besides his writing, Joseph judges in wine competitions in Europe and Asia, conducts masterclasses and seminars internationally, and lectures for the International Wine Business programme at IMC/University of Applied Sciences in Krems, Austria. He also translates a wide range of wine texts from German to English. As a professional voice-over speaker for more than three decades, he also narrates films about wineries and wine regions. He is currently working on a book about the wines of the Balkans.
