The New Wave Montefalco Wines of Cantina Cocco

Winemaker Ilaria Coco established this boutique Montefalco estate in 2008 and released her first vintage in 2014.  She makes her Sagrantino Montefalco with a feminine touch. The wines are non-traditional in that they are especially fresh and easy to drink early on.  Her 3.5 ha vineyard’s alluvial soils, early harvests, shorter than usual maceration times, less time in large oak vessels and more in bottle all play a role.  Total production is small, a little over 1000 cases, so the wines aren’t easy to find. But she does have a US importer, Vegan Wines, and they can tell consumers where to find the wines.   Illaria showed us her Sagrantinos dating from the first vintage to the most recent at her winery in Montefalco.

 The Wines

Cocco 2021 Spoletino Trebbiano 91  Light straw in color. Stony nose of minerals, nectarine and honeycomb. Silky on the attack with nice focus and balance on the palate. Crisp acidity enhances rich fruit flavors. Ilaria’s first vintage of this wine.

Cocco 2018 Phonsano Sagrantino Montefalco 92  Fresh huckleberry aromas.  Soft on the attack with a medium weight, quite elegant and velvet textured palate. Firm but not harsh tannins. Fermented in stainless steel, matured 18 months in 15 hl botti followed by 12 months in stainless steel and one year in bottle prior to release. 14% alc.

Cocco 2017 Phonsano Sagrantino Montefalco 91   A very hot vintage led to an early October picking (usually it’s the end of October or early November).  Red berries and cherry aromas and flavors.  Soft, silky attack with prominent red fruited flavors on a medium weight palate that’s surprisingly fresh for the vintage. 14.5% alc.

Cocco 2016 Phonsano Sagrantino Montefalco 92  Medium dark ruby red.  Shows earth-accented red fruit on the nose. Lovely, suave texture on the palate with very firm tannins requiring further aging in bottle. 14.5% alc.

Cocco 2016 Fontiola Sagrantino Passito Montefalco 92  Semi-opaque. An impressive passito packed with concentrated red and black berries. Silky and creamy smooth with firm tannins coated in dark fruit syrup and flavors that evoke kirsch, cherry and black berries. Lovely firm, dry finish that lingers more than two minutes. Very good. Made with two months drying prior to fermentation and aging in stainless steel tanks and bottle.
