Current Releases from Montefalco’s Cantina Fratelli Pardi

The Pardi winery was established by three brothers in 1919 on the ground floor of the San Marco Hospital.  Like many Montefalco wineries, they initially specialized in making Sagrantino Passito. Today their great grandsons, the brothers Alberto Mario and Gianluca Rio, tend the vineyards and make a wide range of white and red wines. They have 11 hectares of vines in 5 parcels, all in Montefalco, that provide all the fruit for their wines. Alberto Mario Pardi (shown here) is the winemaker; Giovanni Dubini of Palazzone is the consulting winemaker.  Annual production is about 4500 cases, 30% of which is exported.

The Wines

Pardi 2021 Grechetto Montefalco DOC ($18) 90+  Gold green platinum. Complex bouquet of citrus fruit pith with note of fine olive tapenade. Medium full bodied, glycerin rich palate with classic Grechetto aromatics and herbal flavors. Distinctive and focused. Finishes clean and crisp. Handpicked, gently pressed, and fermented in stainless steel.

Pardi 2021 Trebbiano Spoletino Spoleto DOC ($29) 90  Aromas of citrus and green apple. Soft on entry, very clean and fresh with light orchard and stone fruit favors. Nice dry, mineral like finish. Fermented in stainless steel and aged sur lie with battonage. 14% alc. We also tasted the 2018, 2019, and 2020 vintages of which the rich, dense 2018 was our favorite, revealing both the benefits of time and the outstanding vintage. We rated the 2018 vintage 92 points. The 2019 was also excellent, just below the 2018 in quality.

Sagrantino Vine in Pardi’s Montefalco Vineyard

Pardi 2020 Rosso Montefalco DOC ($29) 91  Dark ruby garnet. This is one of the more stylish Rossos from Montefalco. It opens with fresh maraca cherry/berry fruit accented by notes of cedar-leather and a whiff of balsamic. Nicely concentrated and focused with good acidity, fresh flavors, ripe tannins and a long, dry finish. A blend of 70% Sangiovese (Emilia-Romagna), 15% Sagrantino, and the remainder equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermented in stainless steel and matured in 26 hl casks of French and Slovenian oak. 14.5% alc.

Pardi 2019 Rosso Riserva Montefalco DOC ($32) 92  This blend of 70% Sangiovese, 20% Sagrantino and 10% Montepulciano is both complex and elegantly styled. Opening with scents of huckleberry and blueberry complemented by tobacco leaf, it’s especially fresh, silky, and layered on the palate. Finishes with lingering flavorful extract. Matured 18 months in French and Slovenian botti.

Pardi 2018 Sagrantino Montefalco DOC ($38) 92  Medium dark ruby with garnet flecks. Precise dark fruit aromatics of dark cherry, espresso, tobacco, and dried herbs. Focused, tight rich flavors accompanied by dense tannins balanced by subtle oak and rich extract. Silky texture with very good depth and a long finish. Fermented in stainless steel and aged 18 months in 26 hl casks of French and Slovenian oak followed by further aging in stainless. 15.5% alc. We also tasted the 2005 vintage at the winery; it showed the benefits of age with softer, but still gripping, tannins and more complex, secondary aromas and flavors.

2018 Sacrantino Sagrantino Montefalco DOC ($60) 94  Medium dark ruby. Ripe dark cherry with notes of earth and coffee on the nose. Rich and densely flavored with graphite and iodine notes. Classic, elegant style with excellent structure and length and a focused mid-palate. Finishes with lingering sweet tannins. Sourced from the single vineyard Pietrauta with sandy, sedimentary soils. Matured in 26 hl Austrian oak for 24 months followed by further aging in stainless steel tanks. 15% alc.

Pardi 2016 Sagrantino Passito Montefalco DOC ($38) 93 Effusively aromatic showing  sultanas, milk chocolate, caramel, and nutmeg. Rich, creamy texture; rich and deeply flavored of dark red fruit and shavings of baker’s chocolate. Firm tannins balance the 80 g/L RS resulting in a long, dry finish. Made from grapes dried 2 months on mats like Amazon.
